blog #4: Belonging
Everyone wants to feel like they belong. It is hard when there is competition in your family and you feel that you are the only one who is left out and out of place. In Death of a Salesman, Biff’s brother, Happy Loman is not the favourite son in the family. All that Willy cared about in his flashbacks was Biff and his career for being a star football player. Willy only cared about Biff and being famous because Biff was going to make a lot of money once he becomes a successful football player. I am connecting this course text to the show “The Fosters” because this show is about a married couple who adopts many children in different times. The last two children who were adopted was Callie and Jude. Since Callie was a teenager in high school when her and her brother Jude got moved to the Adams-Foster household, she found it really difficult to be able to interact and socialize with the other kids at her school and also at the house herself and her brother were staying at. It took Callie a really long time for her to accept that she was belonged since the beginning, unlike Happy who was still ignored from his parents from the beginning to the end of the book. In Willy’s flashback of him and his family living the “American Dream”, Willy is with over excitement for Biff when he got a scholarship to the University of Virginia, and then Happy comes in to tell his dad that he has been working hard and that he lost a lot of weight. Of course, Willy ignored Happy and just told him to get Biff’s football equipment and head to his game. Death of a Salesman and The Fosters is similar, but also different in some ways. Happy was never happy with his life and knew it was only about Biff and his career going to play football. It was never about Happy or what he has achieved in his life and that they never accepted Happy for the way he was; but with Callie, even though there were three more kids in the house, her step parents still accepted her for who she was and helped her achieve her way to the future and in life.
